My dog ate ibuprofen. How worried should I be?

Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nurofen) is much more toxic to dogs than to people. The risk depends on the total milligrams and your dog's weight.

Depends on the dose Even one tablet can matter for a small dog. Work out the dose, and call your vet if you're unsure.

Danger levels for dogs

DosePossible effect
100–125 mg/kgVomiting, diarrhea, belly pain
175–300 mg/kgKidney failure
Over 400 mg/kgSeizures, wobbliness, coma
Over 600 mg/kgPotentially lethal

Example: one 200 mg tablet is 20 mg/kg for a 10 kg (22 lb) dog, but 80 mg/kg for a 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) dog. Repeated smaller doses can also cause stomach ulcers.

Signs to watch for

Stomach signs can take a day or more to appear, and kidney damage can be silent at first.
